Every award has a moment when debate dies. For the 2005 Ballon d'Or, it died the second the numbers were read out: Ronaldinho, Barcelona's Brazilian magician, 225 points; Frank Lampard, Chelsea's engine, 148; Steven Gerrard, the captain of Istanbul, 142. Seventy-seven points between first and second is not a result — it is a verdict written so large that nobody dares to re-read it.
And yet. A calendar-year award voted in November, priced against two overlapping seasons, counted by a panel whose geography shaped its taste — that is not a measurement. That is a machine for making landslides. So we took the machine apart.

Note the asymmetry: the winner's tally moves least under every weighting scheme we tested — nine variants, and he stays first in eight. That is what a real frontrunner looks like. The audit does not find a robbery. It finds a margin that was written by geography, not by football.
A throne earned is a throne earned. A moat of 77 points, however, was dug by the counting method.
The verdict: Ronaldinho remains the rightful 2005 Ballon d'Or winner — first under the official count, first under every normalized variant, first in the independent engine ledger. But the narrative built on the margin is struck from the record: the 77-point “coronation” does not exist as a measure of superiority — it is an artifact of ballot geography and calendar-window confusion. The true gap is 7 points: a decision, not a dynasty.
How a landslide gets manufactured

Calendar-year award, season-based reality
A November vote prices two overlapping seasons at once. Champions League glory from May and league form from August land in the same basket, double-counted or uncounted depending on when they happened. No voter is wrong; the window itself is wrong.

Panels vote from inside their own football culture. In 2005, the largest bloc lived inside the Premier League's best-ever season story — and priced a team achievement as an individual one. Regional bias is not corruption; it is the default setting of any panel that is not weighted.
