Eric Cantona: Six Seasons, Five Titles, One Full Stop
The turned collar, the pass aimed where only he was looking, the seagulls and the trawler. This file keeps no legends, only accounts: eleven rows, one per year, 473 cells. Row one: age 20, 36 games 13 goals. Row eleven: age 30, 36 games 11 goals — the same appearance count, once as an entrance, once as an exit he signed himself. Between them sit two 86-point peak seasons and a 249-day ban; subtract the two peaks cell by cell, then multiply every move back into his position formula, and this archive arrives at something nobody has filed before: 8 of the 9 things the ban took away never entered his composite score at all — and between the two 86s lies a 0.82-point debt that rounding swallowed.
What This Ledger Keeps
There are no legends here. The legend is in another drawer (Case 012, already stamped); this drawer keeps only accounts: 1986/87 to 1996/97, eleven seasons, 43 attributes and one composite score each.
Eric Daniel Pierre Cantona, born in Marseille on 24 May 1966. A breakthrough at Auxerre at 20 (36 games, 13 goals), then five clubs in six years — Marseille loaned him out, Montpellier took him back then let him go, Nîmes collapsed after the ball he threw at a referee. In November 1992 he had just won the final First Division title with Leeds when Ferguson’s call came; Old Trafford had a King from that day.
Three sentences to own this file: two peaks, one score (86 → 86, with 249 days between); what the years paid him back is not in his legs (the table’s single 94 sits in “clutch”); and the curve has no fall — only a full stop, signed by a 30-year-old. Each claim is evidenced below.
This file was opened the same day as the red stamp. Our log says so: 12:19 on 10 September 2026, Case 012 was filed and the claim “the kick destroyed his peak” was ruled a myth; 13:49, #P00031 was opened. In between, we first erased a rumour from history, then wrote a man’s eleven years back onto the ledger. That order is, more or less, this archive’s entire method.
The ledger has eleven rows, one per year. Row one: age 20, 36 games 13 goals. Row eleven: age 30, 36 games 11 goals. The same appearance count, once as an entrance and once as an exit. In the nine years between he changed clubs six times, won five titles, tore a ligament and broke a man’s jaw.
Every row is a year; he skipped none of them. But a reader of this file should remember one thing especially: row nine holds only 21 appearances — his fewest in five United seasons. The other half of that row is not on the ledger; it is in a different document.

How to read it: pick two columns and run them against each other. Vision (VIS) climbs from 58 to 80 — 22 points; the head was clearest in the final year. Sprint (SPT) fades from 84 to 69 — thirty years old, sand in the knees. In the injured 1990/91 season stamina fell to 60, the only true physical collapse here; the 70 of 1994/95 is not a collapse — the ban cut the appearances, leaving half the row blank.
And the composite column is the most honest of all: the climb to 78, the first summit at 86, the 82 depreciation, then 86 — not one point different from the first. And finally 84: not a decline, an abstention. This curve has no fall, only a full stop. In this archive, that is the first of its kind.
The Only 94 in 473 Cells
The house definition of BIG is “Big-game output”. It is booked to 1995/96 — his comeback season, the season he scored the only goal of the FA Cup final. The runner-up value, 93, appears 2 times: both PAS (Passing), both inside these same two peak seasons.
In other words: the most expensive cell in this ledger is not in his feet. Whichever group holds a matrix’s brightest cell is where a player’s identity lives. His brightest cell is in his head.
Two Peaks, One Score
Case 012 ruled that the kick did not destroy the peak. The file says the same thing differently: subtract the two peak seasons from each other, cell by cell. All three tables below are computed in-house from the same matrix; every cell is reproducible from the CSV.

The direction is suspiciously clean: 8 of the 9 items that fell are legs and lungs (Acceleration, Sprint Speed, Agility, Off the ball, Stamina, Strength, Durability, Aerial Control); all 9 that rose are in the head (Vision, Composure, Concentration, Leadership, Consistency, Work Rate, Showmanship, Goal Hunger, Winning Will, Defensive Zeal, Clutch). 20 items did not move at all — including all 12 technique items (Finishing, Long Shots, Passing, Through Balls, Crossing, Set Pieces, Shielding, First Touch, Dribbling, Heading, Left Foot, Right Foot) and all 7 defending items (1v1 Defending, Marking, Defensive Positioning, Aggression, Zonal Play, Interceptions, Pressing). Technique average 76.5 → 76.5; defending 76.6 → 76.6. Two years, and nothing was lost below the waist.
The one exception is filed rather than hidden: STB (Consistency) 91 → 90, the only faller outside the physical group. We refuse to invent a story for it — what happened between those two rows was already stamped in another volume (Case 012).

So far, respectable bookkeeping. The find is in step three: multiply each move back into his position formula. The AM weighting sheet has only 11 columns, and it gives nothing outside Mental, Technique, Will — mobility, physical and defending all carry weight 0 in his composite. Which is where this table turns sharp: 8 of the 9 fallers never enter the composite score at all, including the two steepest drops (Sprint Speed -2, Agility -2); while 4 of the 9 risers do, worth +0.88, which after Consistency’s -0.06 leaves +0.82.
So “86 → 86” was never the sentence “nothing changed”: 85.54 → 86.36, and that 0.82 was eaten by rounding. Same number after the decimal point is dropped; before it is dropped, he came back stronger than he left.

The Crossing That Never Finished
The Number We Refuse to Compute
About 1994/95 one question always arrives: how many goals would he have scored without the ban? The arithmetic takes one step: his previous season’s rate, 0.53, times the 29 games that were cut out.
And here is the row that is inconvenient to say out loud: in the season he was banned, his rate was 0.57 (12 goals in 21 games) — the highest of his eleven seasons. Half his appearances were taken away and his output per 90 minutes went up. Read honestly, that row is not evidence of a destroyed peak; it is evidence that the ban removed availability, not production.
The premise fails: he was not absent all season
1994/95 still carries 21 games and 12 goals. Any extrapolation built on "a full season" is wrong at step one.
The other evidence runs backwards
His return season: 14 goals in 30 games, 0.47 a game — 0.06 below his pre-ban rate of 0.53. Too small to support any claim of destruction; large enough to delegitimise the extrapolation. The ledger allows us to say exactly this much.
House rule
Per Content Standards §4.1 a counterfactual is the extreme case of L3: it may appear only as an object under review, never in body text or headline. So this number is written down here in order to be voided.
Eleven Seasons, One Verdict Each
Auxerre: 13 goals in 36 games, the breakout season at 20. Young Player of the Year in France would follow — the first time anyone looked.
8 goals in 32 games. In the summer, Marseille bought the most coveted young forward in France.
⇄ Marseille 22/5 + a winter loan at Bordeaux 11/6 = 11 goals in 33 games. Marseille are champions; he scores for both clubs — the first season of the wandering.
On loan at Montpellier: 10 goals in 33 games and the Coupe de France — in the same season as a ten-day ban for a dressing-room fight. The trophy arrives anyway.
8 goals in 18 games as Marseille win the title again. A knee injury and the coach’s distrust keep the appearance count out of step with the output.
⇄ Nîmes 16/2 + Leeds United 15/3 = 5 goals in 31 games. Talked out of retirement by Platini; arrives in England in February and ends the season as a champion of the last-ever First Division.
⇄ Leeds 13/6 + Manchester United 22/9 = 15 goals in 35 games. A £1.2m move in November rewrites the Premier League’s first season: champions at the first attempt. Old Trafford gets its king.
★ Peak: 18 goals in 34 games, the League and FA Cup double, PFA Players’ Player of the Year. Turned collar, cushioned chest, 30-yard passes — the most complete attacking hub in the league.
⇄ The ban: 12 goals in 21 league games before 25 January, then 249 days of silence. Without him United finish one point short — but 77 scored, 28 conceded, the fewest goals against in the division: the coldest counter-evidence the "destroyed peak" narrative has to face.
★ Peak again, straight out of the ban: 14 goals in 30 games, the double, FWA Footballer of the Year + Onze d’Or. The volley at Newcastle after 51 minutes is the thing eight months could not confiscate.
Captain and champion — a fourth Premier League title. After 11 goals in 36 games, on 18 May, aged 30, he signs the retirement himself: the first voluntary full stop in this ledger.
Marks Outside the Ledger
Joins Marseille from Auxerre — France’s most coveted young forward signs for its biggest club; a title that season, with a winter loan to Bordeaux.
Loan at Montpellier: 33 games, 10 goals, a Coupe de France — and the famous thrown boot.
Nîmes: banned for throwing the ball at a referee — at the hearing he told the federation he had no time for idiots, and walked away from football.

Last month I stamped a red seal for him — Case 012, the claim that the kick destroyed his peak, ruled a myth. But a case only rules on rumours; it does not draw curves. When the stamp was dry I realised this archive now holds a very particular kind of player — everyone else’s curve was broken by something; his was signed for, by him.
Verifying Cantona is harder than verifying anyone, because the press spent thirty years writing his myth for him: the kick, the seagulls, the existentialism. But once the season ledger is laid flat, the myths step aside — five titles in six seasons, two peaks with a ban between them, a goal on comeback night, a final title won as captain. The ledger is far cleaner than the legend. Perhaps he noticed this too: in 2024 he admitted even the seagulls line was a throwaway. Once the legend leaves the room, what remains is these 11 rows.
This edition does four new things, all worth recording: subtract the two peak seasons cell by cell, and the ban turns out to have taken his legs and returned his head; scan all 473 cells, and the brightest one is not in his feet; multiply those 38 moves back into his position formula, and the two 86s turn out to sit 0.82 points apart, quietly eaten by rounding; and last, drag out the extrapolation everybody loves and void it on the page. None of the four needed a new source — they only needed someone willing to read a table that already existed.
This file and Case 012 are two halves of one record: the case establishes that the kick destroyed nothing; the file establishes what those six years actually built. Both seals went on the same day — each stamping its own document, neither signing for the other.
Now that the case is closed I can say it: in my whole life, the people who handled the business of "ending" this gracefully can be counted on one hand. Most are carried off by time, some by injury — he was taken off by himself: at the very top, four Premier Leagues in hand, collar up, a small bow, gone. The matrix cannot explain that full stop: VIS 80, OVR 84, age 30 — every cell saying "two more years." He signed anyway. Those of us who keep files spend our lives waiting to be told how stories end; this once, the ending was issued by the man himself. Every row is a year and he skipped none; then, after row eleven, he put the pen down.
