Group D 1994: The Hat-Trick That Was Never His — an Audit of Who Scored What

21 June 1994, one day, two stadiums. At Foxborough, Argentina 4-0 Greece: Batistuta on 2', 44', 90' (pen) — in our ledger the only hat-trick Group D produced under the rule "three or more goals by one player in one match". At the Cotton Bowl, Nigeria 3-0 Bulgaria: three goals, three names — Yekini 21', Amokachi 43', Amuneke 55'. For thirty years the second match has been retold as "Yekini's hat-trick", a reading BallFact Case 013 already corrected. This case does not retry that sentence; it adds a layer: take all 18 Group D goals apart and count again — 12 different names, 3.00 a match, three teams level on six points and six goals but split across 3, 4 and 5 scorers, and exactly one genuine hat-trick in the whole group. The cost of a shape rewriting an attribution is only visible in a ledger like this. Verdict: MYTH BUSTED (attribution layer).

PROLOGUE · 21 June 1994: one day, two stadiums

Two Group D matches were played that afternoon. At Foxboro Stadium, Foxborough: Argentina 4-0 Greece, three of the four goals under one name — Batistuta 2', 44', 90' (pen) — and Maradona on 60' for the fourth. At Cotton Bowl, Dallas: Nigeria 3-0 Bulgaria, three goals written by three men — Yekini 21', Amokachi 43', Amuneke 55'.

Thirty years on, few people retell the first match; the second has been retold as "Yekini's hat-trick". BallFact's Case 013, auditing the Maradona line, already listed that sentence among five corrected popular figures. That correction recorded three men. This case does the duller thing that follows from it: take all 18 goals scored across the group's six matches apart, count them one by one, and then ask — how many hat-tricks did this group actually produce?

1. And the counting exposes three more things: three teams that finished level on six points and six goals had scored theirs through 3, 4 and 5 different men; Stoichkov's 3 goals were split over two matches, so he never met the test; and the squad-leading scorer of the team that won the group never reached three in any single match.

01 · THE CHARGE

One shape, three signatures

THE RETELLING
"On 1994-06-21, at the Cotton Bowl, Yekini scored a hat-trick against Bulgaria."

Retold as settled fact for thirty years; already corrected in BallFact Case 013, Act V ("number inflation"), graded L1 on FIFA's official group table and match reports

THE RECORD
"Three goals at the Cotton Bowl, three names: Yekini 21', Amokachi 43', Amuneke 55'. The same day, at Foxborough, three of Argentina's four goals against Greece carry one name: Batistuta 2', 44', 90' (pen). The group's 18 goals belong to 12 different men; tested as "≥3 goals by one player in one match", exactly one hat-trick exists in Group D — and it stands in another city, on another team's ledger."

recomputed line by line from BallFact's own published Case 013 ledger (the script splits each goal list back to the two teams and refuses to build if the split disagrees with the scoreline)

A hat-trick is a shape. Under a shape there must be three names for it to count.

03 · CROSS-EXAMINATION

The test on trial: three goals are not the same as three goals

Interrogation one: how many men scored that afternoon in Dallas? 3 — Yekini 21', Amokachi 43', Amuneke 55'. Yekini's group total is 1. Our ledger splits Nigeria's 6 goals across 5 names, the highest individual tally being Amokachi's 2; BallFact has since filed both he and Amuneke (#P00022 / #P00027), each of them a signatory of that match.
Interrogation two: why do the two men level on top of the group chart differ? The test ignores totals and reads single matches: ≥3 goals by one player in one match. Stoichkov's 3 are split — 2 against Greece (5' (pen), 55' (pen), both penalties) and 1 against Argentina (61'); Batistuta's 3 came in one match, in one stadium, against Greece. So the group produced exactly one hat-trick, belonging to another man, another team, another city. The rule is printed in the table below so readers can re-run it cell by cell.

The three bars drawn at width 0: our goal-by-goal attribution ledger stops at the Group D stage. The knockout round of that tournament survives in Case 013 as a scoreline and an attendance only (1994-07-03 Argentina 2-3 Romania; no scorers recorded), and nothing at all is filed about Nigeria's round of 16. Another group that summer produced a five-goal single match (see the Salenko dossier). So nothing here claims "of the whole tournament", and no knockout match is attributed.

A scoreline remembers a match; a ledger remembers who.

MYTH BUSTED

Verdict: "Yekini's hat-trick against Bulgaria" does not stand, and at this layer the evidence is harder than the correction already signed in Case 013. Our goal-by-goal Group D ledger records 3 scorers at the Cotton Bowl — Yekini 21', Amokachi 43', Amuneke 55' — and 1 group goal for Yekini. Applying "≥3 goals by one player in one match" to all 18 goals and 12 names, the group produced 1 hat-trick: Batistuta, 1994-06-21, Foxborough, against Greece, 2', 44', 90' (pen). One day, two cities, two claimed hat-tricks: one on a ledger, one in a shape. This case also signs a structural finding: three teams level on six points and six goals scored theirs through 3, 4 and 5 different men — the flatter the split, the better the team's record and the less memorable its individuals; Nigeria won the group with nobody above 2 goals, had no "one man's story" to offer the retellers, and left someone else's hat-trick to carry its match.

Bong Weng, the ArchivistBONG WENG · The Archivist

Writing this case I laid the three Cotton Bowl lines side by side: Yekini 21', Amokachi 43', Amuneke 55'. Two of them now have dossiers here — #P00022 keeps the 43', and his ledger peaks a club season before the World Cup; #P00027 keeps the 55', flat for five rows and lifting only on the national ones. The third has no file, because we hold no season-by-season data for him; his name therefore stayed available to become the stand-in for the whole match.

That is not fair, but it is how memory works: credit gathers towards the most famous name — not because the others did nothing, but because a retelling needs a shape. (Unaudited — this is the archivist's reading, not a page of the ledger.)

The archive can do one dull thing: count every goal again with its time, its stadium and its name. A hat-trick is a shape; the ledger is 3 names. Both are now on file from that afternoon — one hat at Foxboro Stadium, three men at Cotton Bowl.

A scoreline remembers a match; a ledger remembers who.

Data basis and confidence grading · Case 014 is the archive's first pure attribution audit. Every figure is read from BallFact's own published Case 013 ledger (/data/maradona-1994-argentina.csv) by the generating script, which splits each goal list back to the two teams and aborts if the split disagrees with the scoreline; no match figure on this page is typed. L1 High Group D scores, scorers and minutes, penalties and verifiable assists, dates, venues and attendances (graded L1 in Case 013 on FIFA's official group table and match reports); and everything recomputed mechanically from them: 18 goals / 12 scorers / 3.00 a match / the hat-trick test (≥3 by one player in one match — 1 instance group-wide, Batistuta) / three teams on six goals split across 3, 4 and 5 men / each squad high and its share / the failure of "Yekini's hat-trick" (the correction itself is signed in Case 013, Act V — this case does not retry it, it adds the attribution layer). L2 Medium The retrieval of "the retelling" is bounded to what is already documented on this site plus ordinary second-hand phrasing; no new external search was run, because no claim here depends on one. The dossier numbers and links point at published BallFact pages and are checked for existence and status by the script. L3 Uncertain The mechanism reading in the epilogue ("credit gathers towards the most famous name") — the archivist's signed opinion, NOT evidence; background images are AI-generated decoration (desktop only) and make no factual claim. SCOPE STATEMENT Our goal-by-goal attribution ledger stops at the 1994 Group D stage; the knockout round of that tournament survives in this archive as a scoreline with an attendance only (Case 013 records 1994-07-03 Argentina 2-3 Romania, with no scorers), and nothing at all is filed about Nigeria's round of 16 — so no knockout goal is attributed anywhere on this page. Other groups' goal data is not held, so no "whole tournament" phrasing appears anywhere: another group that year did contain a five-goal single match (see the Salenko dossier, #P00019), which belongs to a different ledger.
